Turf Town, 1983

Turf Town: 1983. Small designed Turf Town for a city-wide student-professor competition in Los Angeles. He chose the Olympic Park Area for its location because of its "lack of character". With eight of his students, he "recognized the innate connection between humans and nature and zoned it into the typical existing grid iron street pattern of LA". It would be built at an angle so that the sun would reach all its surfaces all year long, and would pack in commericial high density housing and urban parks augmented with raised pedestrian walkways. The interiors of the structures would have various uses, from recreational centers to central markets. Small described Turf Town as a "planning suggestion with diversity rather than a finite design solution, thus providing an international zoning suggestion for areas that want high density."
