Detroit Stadium: 1969 In 1969, the Detroit Magazine asked Glen Small to design an ideal athletic stadium for the city of Detroit, and covered his original visionary approach in a March 1969 article. The result of the request was a "tension stadium for various sporting events with hotel and office towers and skiing on the roof". The complex was composed of several elevated towers embedded in the earth and draped in an undulating plastic roof whose flexibility resulted in the bowl-like covering, perfect for skiing. The main stadium and the surrounding smaller arenas would be housed in tension members slung onto the towers, with "lift platforms which would move like a giant escalator adjusting to the incline" to allow for optimum seating. With appropriate seating by the water, the fantastic stadium would branch out into a covered marina and a boat launching area.
