Vertical City: 1965-1967. Small's first important foray into the domain of visionary architecture began in 1965 as a design project for his master's thesis at Cranbrook Academy of Art. The main goal of the Vertical City was its ecological solution to urban over-crowding. " Three-dimensional structural compression units of steel would serve as the bones of the city, which would reach as much as 8,000 feet in height and would rest on the ground on points a mile or so apart". Blood vessels would inspire the transportation network. Residents would reside in mobile pods. The San Francisco Chronicle covered the project in a January 1973 article, hailing it as "a fantasy city for the future".
